Why Sumac focuses on STEM learning




In this diagram, we see that science/engineering experiences provide an optimal context for the development of literacy skills. Students who engage in scientific inquiry generate questions, seek answers to those questions, refine their thinking by expressing their ideas, and share their investigations and knowledge with others. In addition, the Standards for Math Practice allow for integration of the essential skills of problem solving and reasoning.

Classrooms that integrate science, math and literacy have been shown to have the potential to increase student achievement in all areas for a diverse range of students, including English language learners. This approach seeks to engage students in learning science, math and engineering concepts in depth, while also increasing their skills in reading, writing, and discussing science.
